New Trustees

The Joint Committees of the SCTA and Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple unanimously proposed the appointment of two new Trustees at the Association’s recent AGM.

They are:-

  1. Mr C. Tiruchelvarayan, a former renowned Quantity Surveyor and a recipient of many public service medals
  2. Prof. M. Sornarajah, the current Professor of the Law Faculty of the National University of Singapore

The House unanimously approved the appointment of the new Trustees and recorded its appreciation and was honoured to have such distinguished and highly learned individuals as our Trustees. They join our existing and long-time Trustee, Dr A. Vijiaratnam as the three Trustees of the Association. For the benefit of our members, a brief background of the new Trustees is given below:-

 

Mr Chelliah Tiruchelvarayan
Mr Tiruchelvarayan was born in Kuala Lumpur on 28th October 1927. He did his education in Singapore and graduated as a Qualified Quantity Surveyor in 1960 from the London University. He came back to Singapore and re-joined the than Public Works Department (PWD), where he started off his career in 1949. During his time with the PWD, he was appointed as the Quantity Surveyor for all projects undertaken by the Government and made in charge of all MINDEF Construction Projects.

He later became a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a Fellow of the Institute of Arbitrators of London and a Fellow of the Institute of Surveyors & Valuers of Singapore.

In 1976, he was decorated and honoured with the Silver Medal for Public Administration by the late President of Singapore Benjamin Sheares.

Mr Tiruchelvarayan is not new to community services. He was the former Patron and President of the Singapore Hockey Federation. He was also a former Committee Member of the Ceylon Sports Club and a current Life Member of the Club.

Our community is indeed honoured to have such a distinguished person on board as one of our Trustees and look forward to his guidance and wisdom.

 

Professor M. Sornarajah
Professor M. Sornarajah was born in Sri Lanka. He was an Advocate and Solicitor in Sri Lanka before pursuing further studies and career advancement in the United Kingdom where he also obtained his Doctorate in Law.

He was the Head of the Law School of the University of Tasmania prior to joining the NUS Law School as its own Professor.

He was a Sterling Fellow at the Yale Law School and a Research Fellow at the Centre for International Law, Cambridge. He was also the International Law Fellow and Visiting Professor at the American University at Washington DC.

He is currently also a Fellow of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration and is on the Regional Panel of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre.
